Ojibwe Language Project

Established: 2017

The City of Park Rapids added bilingual signage to signs in city parks early on in the project.

Many signs in Park Rapids are bilingual, with text in both Ojibwe and English. These signs are a part of the Park Rapids Ojibwe Language Project.

The project grew out of a three-year collaboration among the Park Rapids League of Women Voters, Park Rapids Library, and members of the Pine Point Community. It was inspired by the Bemidji Ojibwe Language Project. The project placed bilingual signage in some businesses, city parks and public buildings, including the public library. The initiative has also spread to other northern Minnesota communities.

Drafted in 2017, the project's goal is to incorporate bilingual signage throughout the community "to create an inclusive, welcoming environment with an awareness of and respect for Ojibwe Culture." It aims to foster closer relationships between the communities of Park Rapids and Pine Point, recognize the Ojibwe inhabitants of this land, and encourage curiosity about Ojibwe language and culture.
