Medicine in Park Rapids
Established: 1946
Built on the edge of town in 1946, the face of Park Rapids' hospital has changed significantly over the years as have the services it provides. CHI St. Joseph's Health remains a source of community pride.
When the first Euro-Americans arrived in Park Rapids, their options for medical care were very limited. Residents often had to rely on home remedies or hope that they could summon a doctor from neighboring towns. Fortunately, it wasn't long before Park Rapids had several thriving medical practices.
Park Rapids' doctors treated many illnesses and injuries from measles and diphtheria to logging accidents and boating mishaps. Doctors Plympton Walling and Charles Cutler both arrived in Park Rapids within months of each other in 1882. That year, the first pharmacy in town opened as well. Other early doctors included Dr. P.G. Winship and Dr. William Stone.
The current Park Rapids hospital, CHI St. Joseph's Health, opened its doors in 1946 under the care of the Sisters of St. Joseph's. Since then, it has served as a vital resource for the local community, providing medical care for both residents and the growing tourist population. Over the years, the hospital has undergone significant expansion and modernization, continuously adapting to meet the evolving needs of Park Rapids and its surrounding communities.
